FAMILY MEDICINE
Based on a bio-psychosocial model of care, the medical specialty of family medicine is intrinsically linked to behavioral medicine and incorporates a holistic approach to medicine. This approach differs significantly from other medical specialties, which are based on a disease model of care. As a result, family physicians are trained to examine the “whole person” and can diagnose if a patient’s complaint is purely physical or due to an associated mental, social, or family problem.
Since their training is so comprehensive—requiring in-depth medical knowledge, a wealth of clinical skills, as well as understanding of psychological influences— family doctors can treat every member of the family—from the newborn to the geriatric patient. This continuum of care exists nowhere else and is one of the reasons family physicians gain the trust of their patients, their families, and their loved ones.

Non-invasive diagnostic methods include cardiac ultrasonography using M-Mode, two-dimensional, Doppler echocardiography and color flow. The program of fetal cardiac ultrasonography offers evaluation and treatment for pregnant women who are at known risk for infants with congenital cardiac disorders or those at risk for fetal cardiac arrhythmias. Another area of clinical and research expertise is the utilization of invasive cardiac electrophysiology in the diagnosis and the use of radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Antiarrhythymic agents in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and in the transesophageal approach to their diagnosis currently are being studied. In conjunction with physicians the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, pediatric cardiologists are now treating many forms of congenital heart disease in the neonate and infant, with significant reduction in morbidity and mortality.
