GENERAL PEDIATRICS
The General Pediatrics Division treats all aspects of pediatric care from the inpatient newborn stay through college. This includes well-child care, care of all illnesses, inpatient care of sick children, adolescent care, adolescent gynecologic problems, minor procedures, and all other aspects of pediatric, adolescent, and young adult care. There is a special focus on Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics with emphasis on ADHD and Learning Disabilities.
PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY
The Pediatric Cardiology Division is a regional pediatric cardiac referral center recognized by the State of Florida for the treatment of patients with congenital and acquired heart disease. The division has special expertise in therapeutic invasive procedures such as balloon valvuloplasty for the correction of cardiac lesions including pulmonic stenosis, aortic stenosis, and coarctation of the aorta. Non-invasive diagnostic methods include cardiac ultrasonography using M-Mode, two-dimensional, Doppler echocardiography and color flow. The program of fetal cardiac ultrasonography offers evaluation and treatment for pregnant women who are at known risk for infants with congenital cardiac disorders or those at risk for fetal cardiac arrhythmias. Another area of clinical and research expertise is the utilization of invasive cardiac electrophysiology in the diagnosis and the use of radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Antiarrhythymic agents in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and in the transesophageal approach to their diagnosis currently are being studied. In conjunction with physicians the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, pediatric cardiologists are now treating many forms of congenital heart disease in the neonate and infant, with significant reduction in morbidity and mortality. Cardiac arrhythmias also are being treated surgically. The division's program also includes medical management of pediatric cardiac transplant patients.
PEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGY
The Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology provides inpatient and outpatient consultations for intestinal and liver diseases as well as nutritional problems. In conjunction with our Main Medical Campus our facilities include diagnostic areas completely equipped for all GI investigational procedures: endoscopic, biopsy, esophagael motility, pH monitoring, and others. Special services include breath-hydrogen analysis, dietary consultation, and home parenteral and special enteral alimentation. The division works closely with pediatric surgery and liver/intestinal transplant program.
PEDIATRIC PULMONOLOGY
The Department of Pediatric Pulmonology Medicine offers a full range of services for children with acute and chronic respiratory diseases. Special emphasis is on asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and pediatric lung transplantation. Inpatient and outpatient consultation are available, in addition to pulmonary function testing, flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopic, and nutrition counseling for children with chronic lung disease.
PEDIATRIC NEPHROLOGY
The Pediatric Nephrology Division treats all aspects of renal disease and related metabolic disturbances with particular emphasis on immunology, nutrition, and disturbances in mineral metabolism. The division has extensive experience in the performance and interpretation of renal biopsies. An interdisciplinary team provides dialysis on an acute and long-term basis, as well as renal transplantation.
